siem reap

Siem Reap could be called the tourism capital of Cambodia. It is located in the North West of the country, and is the gateway to the Angkor region.

Siem Reap boasts much colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter, and around the Old Market. Many of the buildings have been converted to craft shops, bars and restaurants which now provide fantastic local or international dishes and sometimes traditional Apsara dance performances. Next to the popular Angkor Temples there are lots of other activities to choose from e.g. visiting the silk farms, rice-paddy countryside, fishing villages and bird sanctuary near the Tonle Sap Lake or even the jungle waterfall at Kulen Mountain.

Access to Siem Reap is now becoming more varied. The most usual access point is the Siem Reap International Airport along National Road 6. However, if you are not on a tight time schedule and want to save some budget; overland trips by bus or taxi from Bangkok are also becoming more popular as the road is now totally upgraded. For those entering Cambodia via Phnom Penh, you can also travel by bus or taxi to Siem Reap, or take a leisurely all-day boat trip along the Tonle Sap lake.

If you are arranging transport on your own, you may find the directions, in Khmer language, useful for giving to your tuk-tuk driver. Please see below.
